A Lewis Base is a species that donate e- pairs (ie. NH3, F-, OH-). While, a Lewis Acid is one that accepts e- pairs (ie. BF3, H+).

Lewis Acid: a species that accepts an electron pair and will have vacant orbitals
Lewis Base: a species that donates an electron pair and will have lone-pair electrons

Lewis acids have empty orbitals which means that they can accept electrons while lewis bases give away their electrons.

Lewis Acids accept electrons while Lewis Bases donate electrons.

This is not to be confused with Bronsted:
Bronsted acids donate protons while Bronsted Bases accept protons.

How do these definitions differ from the Bronsted definitions?

A Lewis acid accepts electrons and a Lewis base donates electrons. A Bronsted acid donates protons and a Bronsted base accepts protons.

How do you know if a compound is an acid or base simply by looking at the compound name?

A lewis base donates electrons while the lewis acid accepts electrons.
