What is the difference between amphoteric and amphiprotic substances?

Amphiprotic refers to substances that are able to accept and donate a proton or Hydrogen ion. All amphoteric substances can be considered amphiprotic. Amphoteric refers to the ability to act as an acid and a base. All amphiprotic substances cannot be considered amphoteric.

I just wanted to clarify that the book defines amphoteric compounds as compounds that react with both acids and bases, not necessarily as compounds that can act as both acids and bases. That is why aluminum oxide can be classified as amphoteric but not amphiprotic (because aluminum oxide does not have any protons that it can donate). Water is define as amphiprotic because it can both accept and donate hydrogen ions.

Amphoteric refers to the ability to react with an acid or base. An amphiprotic substance is a substance that transfers (accepts or donates) H+ ions.

Amphiprotic substances can both accept and donate an H+ ion (proton). Amphoteric substances are both acidic and basic in character and can react with acids and bases.
