Postby Shannon Asay 1C » Sun Dec 01, 2019 10:32 am

What properties make an acid strong versus weak?

Strong acids produce more protons in solution than a weak acid. Strong acids are completely ionized in solution whereas weak acids are incompletely ionized.

Strong acids and bases are 100% ionized when reacted. Weak acids and bases are less than 100% ionized. Strong acids produce more protons than their weak counterpart while strong bases produce more hydroxide ions than weak bases.

Strong acids produce more protons, whereas weak acids produce less.

Strong acid: almost all the molecules are deprotonated in the solution
Weak acid: only a small fraction of the molecules or ions are deprotonated in the solution.

Usually acids that have an atom which is more electronegative will be stronger

Strong acids almost completely dissociate into the ions, whereas weak acids only partially dissociate into the respective ions.

Is this a complete binary or is there some continuity?
