What are the specific chemical properties of acids, bases and amphoteric compounds?

This depends on how we define acids and bases. If we use the bronsted definitions then an acid is a molecule that donates a proton in the form of H+1 (hyrdronium ion) and a base is a molecule that accepts a proton. If we use the Lewis definitions then an acid is a molecule that accepts an electron pair and a base is a molecule that donates an electron pair. An amphoteric compound is simply a compound that can do both (behave like an acid and a base).

Additionally, for the Arrhenius definition, Arrhenius acids react with water to produce H+, and Arrhenius bases react with water to produce OH-.
