Definition of Acid

Postby Jessa Maheras 4F » Tue Dec 03, 2019 9:22 pm

We are given the Lewis and Bronsted definitions of acids in class. Each definition makes sense on its own, but how are the two definitions related? Does the classification of acid or base change depending on how you define it? Or is a Lewis acid also a Bronsted acid? (Even though it seems like this isn't the case.)

But yeah, where is the overlap, if there is any? Thank you!

Lewis acid and Bronsted acid can be the same. When an acid donates a proton (bronsted), sometimes the lone pair from the bronsted base is given to the acid, which also makes it a lewis acid.

A Lewis acid simply includes more molecules than a Bronsted acid. They are both proper definitions for acids, but a Lewis acid is more broad and includes more molecules.

Something can be a Lewis acid and Bronsted acid at the same time, but they don't always have to be both. However, they will never contradict each other.

I am a bit confused on the concept of acid and base. Can someone tell me the difference between both?
