What exactly is an electron-withdrawing group? Can you give some examples? Thanks.

An atom or group that draws electron density from neighboring atoms towards itself, usually by resonance or inductive effects

An electron withdrawing group pulls electrons towards it from another source. It is a way of determining the relative strength of a conjugate base. E- with drawing groups delocalize a neg charge.

For example HClO or HBrO
