Weak Acid Meaning

Postby Bailey Giovanoli 1L » Thu Dec 03, 2020 11:25 pm

When an acid is referred to as weak, it means the bond is harder to break, right? Please correct me if I am wrong!

I believe you're correct! If an acid is weak, it means it does not dissociate completely, meaning it's harder to break :)

Yes! I'm not entirely sure if this is correct so if someone could confirm, but I believe this is because since weak acids are incompletely ionized in a solution, they exist as molecules with just a few ions in the solution. So, the bonds holding them together must be stronger so they do not break apart into multiple ions within the solution.

Yes, you are correct! As the previous commenters have stated, weak acids do not dissociate completely in water. Thus, the bonds in weak acids are stronger/ harder to break apart than strong acids.
