Can an acid have a negative pH?

According to Dr. Lavelle, the range of molarity when calculating pH is 1.0M to 10-14M. If you plug those both into the pH equation. We get a pH range of 0-14. If our molarity was allowed to more than 1 I guess a negative pH does exist. I just don't know how you would verify with like litmus paper or something.

I don't believe the pH can drop below 0 given that the scale is 0-14.

I think for the purpose of this class it's safe to assume that the lowest a pH can be is 0.

I think that there technically an acid can have a negative pH, but I dont think it will be addressed in this class.

A negative pH is possible as a very strong acid can go below 0, but for the purposes of the class I'm assuming the scale is going to be from 0-14.

I believe it is possible for a very strong acid to have a negative pH based on the logarithmic pH scale of the concentration of hydronium ions. But I think for this class it is going to be addressed within the 0-14 scale.

There is no negative PH. It can only range to the scale of 0-14.

Hi! I think it is possible for an acid to have a negative pH, but for the purposes of this class I don't think we have to deal with such an acid.

It is possible if the molarity of hydrogen ion is greater than 1. If you have 5M HCl solution, -log(5)=-0.7

Acids cannot have a negative pH; the pH scale ranges from 0-14.

I think that the pH scale goes from 0-14 (as it is found by finding -log[H+]). In order for the pH to be negative, the concentration of H+ would have to be greater than 1M.

Yes. If for example there was a strong acid with a molarity greater than 1M, it would have a pH less than 0. In the same way, if a strong base had a molarity greater than 1M it could have a pH greater than14. For chem 14A, I believe it is not important that we know this.

No because the pH scale only ranges fro 0-14.

pH can exceed the 0 to 14 but as Lavelle mentioned, we wont have to worry about it since we mostly deal with the concepts of this class and not so much the equilibrium equations so we do not have to worry about it.
