Which Acids and Bases to remember

Postby Andersen Chu 2H » Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:06 pm

Hello,

Which strong/weak acids and bases do we need to memorize for Chem 14B?

Thanks

Based on previous lectures, it seems we only really need to know the six strong acids (HCl, HBr, HNO3, H2SO4, HI, and HClO4), and the general weak ones that he keeps mentioning (acetic acid, H2SO3, HF, HNO2). For bases, I think we just need to know that group one and two oxides/hydroxides are strong bases and then we need to know the weak ones like ammonia, CH3NH2 and commonly used ones like that.

Since we will probably be dealing with weak acids and bases this quarter, every acid and base that is not part of the strong acids and bases is a weak acid/base. So the strong acids are HCl, HClO4, HClO3, HNO3, HBr, HI, H2SO4. and the strong bases are the groups one and two metal oxides.

Hi! I just wanted to add that organic acids are generally weak. For example, acids containing a carboxyl group (like COOH) are weak acids.

Did this actually hold up in 14B? Just curious.
