Acid protonated
Hello, in question #2 of today's lecture, Professor Lavelle stated that "under acidic conditions, acid is protonated as HA." What does this mean and more specifically, what does protonated as HA mean?

Re: Acid protonated
"Protonated" just means that an atom or molecule or ion has a proton added to it, so it forms a conjugate acid.

Re: Acid protonated
Being protonated as HA, means that the proton stays as HA and will not dissociate. This is because the HA will always gain a proton if it turns into H+ and A-, as the solution its in is more acidic than the acid itself, so there will always be H+ to attach onto A- and keep it as HA, meaning it is in its protonated form.

Re: Acid protonated
The protonated acid means that the acid will not lose its proton H+ and instead stay in the form HA
