What acids/bases are we expected to memorize

Postby cherublina1l » Mon Nov 29, 2021 1:27 pm

Are we expected to memorize all of the strong acid/bases in order to identify if an acid is strong or weak? Also if anyone has a mnemonic device to help with memorizing the strong ones itd be appreciated!

I would definitely look over and remember the examples mentioned in class, but additionally you can make a pretty good estimate on the strength of the acid based on the bond length (which you would estimate based on the periodic table trends).

The ones covered in class are ones that you should for sure memorize, otherwise I would find a list of AP or IB chemistry compounds that are acids and bases and try to also remember those.

This site definitely helped me memorize the strong acids/bases! I just began by jotting them down to refresh my memory :)

The 7 strong acids, HBr, HI, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, HClO3, and HClO4, can be memorized using the mnemonic Briclsonoclo. Strong bases include hydroxides of group 1 and group 2.

I use a mnemonic to memorize the strong acids. SO I Brought NO Clean ClOthes. H2SO4, HI, Hbr, HNO3, HCl, HClO4/HClO4. I hope this helps!
