Final question on acids

Postby 805752034 » Fri Dec 03, 2021 6:39 pm

For the Final, would it be suggested that we memorize and understand the trends with binary acids and oxyacids.

Maybe not memorize, but definitely understand the concept behind why the trend occurs and have basic understanding of what lies where!

I would definitely understand the basic trends. For binary acids and oxoacids all you should really know is that atoms with larger radius (binary acids) are stronger because the A-H bond is weaker. For oxoacids, the acids with more O atoms is stronger because the central atom will have a higher oxidation state and thus repel other positive charges and because the negative charge of the molecule losing the H+ ion is more spread out or delocalized over the multiple O atoms, making the conjugate base weaker and thus the acid stronger.
