pH of salt solutions

Hi!

I was just a little confused on how calculating the pH of a salt solution differs from non-salt solutions? Like when do we know something is a salt and what does that mean in terms of dissociation and strength of the acid/base?

The pH of a salt solution is different from non-salt solutions because salts can either be neutral, acidic or basic, depending on their dissociation. When a salt dissolves in water, it can either donate or accept hydrogen ions, thereby affecting the hydrogen ion concentration and thus the pH of the solution. A salt solution is neutral if it has equal concentration of hydrogen and hydroxide ions, acidic if it has more hydrogen ions, and basic if it has more hydroxide ions. The strength of the acid or base in a salt solution depends on the dissociation constant (Ka or Kb) and the concentration of the ions produced by the salt.
