Oxides as Strong Bases

Postby Ishita S 2E » Fri Dec 08, 2023 7:52 pm

Are group 1 and 2 oxides like Na2O or CaO considered strong bases? Why?

Yes, they are strong bases because they contain the oxide ion, O(2-). This ion is negative and has a high tendency to grab protons, H+ from nearby water molecules if it's added to water. Therefore the water would become OH- and Na2O would be classified as a base.
