Base Strength

Postby Dominic » Fri Dec 08, 2023 9:48 pm

Can someone please explain this one to me?

6C.17 Which is the stronger base, the hypobromite ion, BrO- or morphine, C17H19O3N? Justify your answer.

Thank you

The lone pair on nitrogen in morphine is less available for accepting a proton compared to the lone pair on oxygen in the hypobromite ion. This is because nitrogen is more electronegative than oxygen. As a result, the hypobromite ion (BrO⁻) is expected to be the stronger base compared to morphine (C17H19O3N).
