Strong Acids and Bases

Postby Darius_Beckley_3C » Sat Dec 09, 2023 3:16 pm

I understand that a longer bond makes a stronger acid, but does that same rule apply for bases?

Think about it this way: a base wants to accept a proton, while an acid wants to give away a proton. If a longer bond leads to a stronger acid, the conjugate base with that long bond would be extremely weak, with negligible basicity. As the acid gets weaker, the conjugate base gets stronger. That is my understanding of it.
