Suggest an explanation for the different strengths of (b) acetic acid and formic acid.

Can someone explain why formic acid is a stronger acid than acetic acid? Is it because is looses protons more easily? Thank you

Yes, you are correct that the one that loses protons more easily would the stronger acid; however, you'll want to provide a more in depth answer than that. Acetic acid doesn't lose its proton as easily because it contains a methyl (CH3) group. Methyl groups are electron donating as opposed to electron withdrawing, (electron withdrawing groups make an acid stronger by pulling electron density away from the species bonded to the H) so it makes it harder for acetic acid to lose its proton

the anion for formic acid (HCOO-) also exhibits resonance, so it's more stable than the anion for acetic acid (CH3COO-). since the anion is more stable, formic acid is slightly stronger
