You can tell if a substance is amphoteric depending on its interaction with water. We know that for it to be an acid, it has to donate a proton so it must contain a hydrogen atom. In order for it to be a base, it myst be able to accept a proton from the water.

Hello thank you. Would any molecule be able to accept a proton or does it have to have a negative charge?

In order to accept a proton, there must be at least one lone pair of electrons to form a bond with the proton which is why I also find it very useful to draw out the structures and that's what helped me determine which molecules acted as a base or acid or both.
