Amphoteric Compound Identification

Postby morganm » Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:21 pm

What is the best way to identify a compound as being amphoteric? Would this just be memorization-based or is there a trick?

Hello, I believe to identify an amphoteric compound you would see if the compound has a hydrogen so it can donate an H+ and a lone pair that would be able to accept an H+. For example, H2PO4- has a hydrogen it can give away and a negative charge, so it can accept an H+. Hope this helps!
