Textbook problem 6.21

Postby Hayden Zhao 3C » Fri Dec 08, 2023 1:48 pm

Why are the two nitro groups amphiprotic? I understand that both nitro groups can bond with another H+ proton, but why can they also lose a proton? Is it because they are bound to an H? Thanks!

The NH groups can either become NH2+ or N- in water, therefore they are amphoteric.
