Other autoprotolysis examples

Postby Elisabeth Atwater 2D » Mon Jan 29, 2024 3:38 pm

Are there any other well known examples of autoprotolysis besides water if it's just proton transfer between the same type of molecule? Or is water the only popular one/one we really need to know?

Autoprotolysis can occur in liquid ammonia (NH3), forming ammonium ions (NH4+) and amide ions (NH2-). Autoprotolysis can occur in "polar solvents." I would assume that we only have to understand autoprotolysis in water.
