Autoprotolysis of Water

Postby Nicole Gamboa 2M » Sun Nov 20, 2016 11:28 pm

Hi all,
I had a question about the autoprotolysis of water and the transferring of a proton in the reaction. I didn't really understand what the purpose of that specific proton donation is and why that reaction occurs?
Thanks!

Autoprotolyis is an important phenomenon that helps to explain the pH scale and also gives a relationship between [H+] and [OH-] which is used in many equilibrium calculations. The reaction happens simply because it is at equilibrium so the forward and reverse reactions are occurring simultaneously and at the same rate
