How do you know whether an oxide is an acid, base or amphoteric??

Metal oxides tend to be bases, while non-metal oxides tend to be acids. There is a diagonal band similar to the metalloid band and those oxides are amphoteric. I think you can find that in the textbook.

Do amphoteric compounds encompass amphiprotic compounds as well?

Yes, amphiprotic compounds are included in amphoteric compounds because they can act as an acid or base. Amphiprotic compounds act as acids or bases by either donating or receiving protons.
