What makes something amphoteric?

Postby Ashvi_Luthra_4H » Fri Dec 07, 2018 3:52 pm

What exactly gives molecules like H20 their amphoteric properties?

amphoteric substances react with both acids and bases.
i.e. Al2O3
Al2O3 + 6HCl --> 2AlCl3 + 3H20
in this reaction, aluminum chloride reacts with an acid, HCl

2NaOH + Al2O3 + 3H2O --> 2Na[Al(OH)4]
in this reaction, aluminum chloride reacts with a base, NaOH

Amphoteric compounds have both basic and acidic character so they can act as either an acid or a base in a reaction, in comparison to a lot of molecules that are labeled as either an acid or base.

Compounds that demonstrate both acidic and basic properties, and can act as either an acid or a base are charactarized as amphoteric. Metal oxides as well as hydroxides are examples of amphoteric compound, with its acidic or basic nature being in respect to their oxidizations.

H2O is amphoteric because it can be an acid or base. This means is can either accept an electron or donate an electron.

something that is amphoteric has both basic and acidic character, which means it can accept an e- pair or donate one. Water is a common amphoteric substance
