how do you know when a compound is amphoteric?

A compound is amphoteric if it can act as both an acid and a base. It can donate protons and also accept protons.

An amphoteric compound can donate and/or accept protons. Amphoteric compounds have both acid and base-like properties. Some examples of amphoteric compounds are water and amino acids (which make up proteins).

This means that it can be either a acid (which donates a proton) or a base (which excepts a proton).

The compound can be both acidic or basic, by donating a proton or accepting a proton.

Any compound is considered amphoteric if it acts as both an acid and a base, in other words it can either donate a proton or accept one (e.g. H2O)
