Characteristics of Amphoteric Compounds

Are there specific characteristics of molecules that allow you to identify them as amphoteric? If so, what are they?

There's a band of elements whose oxides are amphoteric between the metals and the nonmetals: Be, Al, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb

The metalloids are amphotermic. They can act as both to lose and gain a proton.
