State whether the following oxides are acidic, basic, or amphoteric: (a) BaO; (b) SO3; (c) As2O3; (d) Bi2O3.

Why is b acidic? Doesn't the molecule have to have a H+ to donate in order for it to be acidic?
Could someone also provide a examples of c and d reacting in an amphoteric manner?

Metal oxides generally form basic oxides, while nonmetal oxides generally form acidic oxides. Sulfur is a nonmetal thus will be acidic. Amphoteric oxides (shown in class) can react as both an acid or base to form a salt and water.

When SO3 dissolves in water, it becomes H2SO4, the sulfate acid. For c and d, if they react with acidic matter, they can act as a base. If they react with basic matter, they can act as an acid.

Non metal oxides generally form acids and metal oxides form strong bases.
