How do you determine between acid, base, and amphoteric?

Identify the acid or oxyacid and then determine if it has an electron pair to donate to a proton and therefore maybe also amphoteric.

you can also look at the conjugate to see if it's stable.

Amphoteric means that the compound can act as both an acid and a base. So you have to see what parts of the compound can act as both an acid or a base.

You can also know if a compound is amphoteric by the periodic table (refer to the diagram he showed in lecture of the diagonal stretch that tend to form amphoteric compounds).
