Amphoteric Compounds trend

Postby IsabelMurillo3K » Wed Dec 16, 2020 3:21 am

Hey guys!
I was wondering if there was a simple way to identify amphoteric compounds from trends on the periodic table? I believe I read somewhere that amphoteric compounds tend to either be transition metals or metalloids, and I was wondering if anyone could clarify that? Thanks in advance!

Prof. Lavelle posted picture of the diagonal band of metal oxides in the periodic table.

And besides these metal oxides, I only know there is H_{2}PO_{4}^{2-}

It's a little tricky since you pretty much just have to memorize those. It helps to think of them as almost being the diagonal line that marks where the metalloids are. It also helps me to trace it myself on the periodic table to get more of a feel for which ones they are and hopefully remember it later.
