Amphoteric Compounds
Amphoteric compounds were said to react with acids and bases depending on the conditions. What exactly are these conditions?

Re: Amphoteric Compounds
I believe these conditions are whether or not the compound is less or more acidic or basic than the compound it is interacting with. If it is more acidic than the compound then it will act as an acid, if it is more basic, it will act as the base. Hope this helps!
Re: Amphoteric Compounds
If a solution is basic, then the amphoteric compound will act as acidic. If a solution is acidic, then the amphoteric compound will act as basic.

Re: Amphoteric Compounds
amphoteric compounds are essentially "flexible" compounds. They will react in a way that is needed and determined by their environment. If they are reacting with basic compounds, they will act acidic and vice versa.

Re: Amphoteric Compounds
Between the metal oxides (bases) and nonmetal oxides 9acids) there is a diagonal band of Amphoteric oxides closely matching the diagonal band of metalloids

An amphoteric oxide can serve as an Arrhenius acid and base; involve metalloids, post transition metals, and some d-block metals
