Is HSO4- an amphoteric compound?

Postby Jacqueline Vargas 3L » Sat Dec 04, 2021 10:28 am

Hi!

In question #3 for the Achieve Week 10 homework we are asked to find the conjugate base and the conjugate acid of the same compound, HSO4-. This means that HSO4- can donate and receive H+, so it acts as both a Brønsted acid and a Brønsted base, and is therefore an amphoteric compound. Is this correct?

Thanks for any clarification!

Yes! You explained it correctly yourself! Because it can both donate and accept protons, it demonstrates qualities of a Bronsted Lowry Acid and Base.

Yes exactly! amphoteric compounds can act as brosted acid and base because it is able to accept and donate H+. This means it can interact either as a base or an acid. :)

This is correct! HSO4- can either donate a proton (becoming SO42-) or accept a proton (becoming H2SO4). Another example of an amphoteric compound would be H2PO42-, which can either accept a proton to become H3PO4, or donate a proton to become HPO43-.
