BaO

Im doing Chapter 12 hw as review and there is a question asking to state whether compounds are acidic, basic, or amphoteric, and it says BaO is acidic, but I don't understand why. I thought it'd be basic

Incorrect. The answer is in fact given as basic.

It is in fact basic. Because hydroxide ions are formed from the reaction of BaO with water, you know that it is a basic oxide. If it were to form a bronsted acid instead of these hydroxide ions, you would then know that it is instead an acidic oxide. One easy way to remember this is that metal oxides are typically formed from metals.

When metal oxides combine with H20, it forms a base.

BaO is basic; any group1 metal's oxide are basic
