Strong and weak acids

Postby 706387233 » Sun Dec 01, 2024 12:53 am

I know that there is a two or more rule, in that if the number of oxygens is 2 or more than the number of hydrogens in the acid, it is a strong acid. Is this just a pattern, or is there something going on chemically as well?

The "two or more rule" is not just a pattern but has a chemical basis: when the number of oxygens in an acid exceeds the number of hydrogens by two or more, the additional electronegative oxygens stabilize the conjugate base through delocalization of negative charge, making the acid stronger.
