Identifying Lewis Acid
Why is it important to list the oxidation state when identifying the Lewis Acid? For example, for the Lewis Structure [PtCl4(NH3)2], the Lewis Acid is Pt(IV). Why would it be wrong to just put Pt? thanks

Re: Identifying Lewis Acid
Transition metals have variable oxidation states so this helps specify the oxidation state in that transition metal complex.

Re: Identifying Lewis Acid
A simple Pt could be confusing to a reader, and it just makes it easier for everybody if you take the extra measure to write the oxidation number.

Re: Identifying Lewis Acid
When going from the written form to the formula, it could get confusing due to the fact that transition metals have various oxidation states and this could affect the formula if not known.
