How do you determine if an element is a Lewis acid?

Lewis acids and Bronsted-Lowry acids both become negatively charged.

I am also confused by this.
I understand that a Bronsted acid can be determined by following the transfer of H+ in a reaction. However, I am wondering if there are any obvious ways to tell whether a species is a Lewis acid without drawing out Lewis structures to see the transfer of electrons.

I'm in the same situation. How are we supposed to know which one is an acid or base by looking at it?

An easy way to tell which one is an acid is to write out the balanced chemical equation and the species that accepts the electrons will be the Lewis acid.

One thing to look for is if something has a lone pair of electrons, it would be a Lewis base because it would donate those electrons.

The best way to tell is by drawing the Lewis structure. However, other posts above are correct in that you can write out the chemical equation to see which species accepts electrons to see if it acts as an acid.

Is this like when you need to complete an octet and you form a bond with another nearby atom? If so, in such case would the one seeking to complete the octet be the one that accepts (Lewis acid) and the one that attaches to it (through a bond) the Lewis base??? OR does this have nothing to do with completing the octet? I'm a bit confused?
