solution of weak acids with higher pH

Postby Corryn Doll » Thu Jun 14, 2018 10:14 am

Why do solutions of weak acids have a higher pH value than solutions of strong acids at the same concentration?

weaker acids dissociate less, meaning H3O+ is produced less. So, [H3O+] is lower in concentration than that of stronger acid, hence pH = -log[H3O+] is higher.

Weak acids do not completely dissociate and thus the proton yield is lower. Consequently, the pH is higher than for a strong acid which almost always dissociate completely and yields higher proton concentration.

less dissociation => less H30+ produced=> higher pH!

Since weak acids do not dissociate 100%, they will produce less H3O+. The concentration of H3O+ will be lower, and results in a higher pH value.
