BaO is basic according to the solutions manual. Can someone explain why?

Can someone also explain why SO3 is acidic?

I think BaO is basic because the O will have 3 lone pairs which will allow it to donate an electron pair?

A metal hydroxide is generally basic, which is why BaO is basic. SO3 is acidic because a nonmetal oxide is generally acidic.

Is there a way to tell based on the lewis structures or do we just have to remember this?

I would just remember the trends. (Nonmetal oxides = acidic, metal oxides = basic) BaO is basic because when it reacts with water, Ba(OH)2 is formed which means OH is formed.
