SO3 acid or base?

Postby Kathryn 1F » Sat Dec 08, 2018 8:34 pm

The textbook says SO3 is an acid (6th edition 12.17), and i understand that the sulfur can accept electrons, but why can't the oxygens donate their lone pairs, making it amphoteric?

SO3 is a non-metal oxide and non-metal oxides are acidic in nature. The aqueous solution of acidic oxides donates protons, therefore SO3 is an acidic oxide
