Generally, oxides of nonmetals form acidic oxides (SO3), oxides of metals form basic oxides (BaO), and oxides of the elements in and close to the diagonal line of metalloids typically form amphoteric oxides (As2O3 and Bi2O3), which can function as both an acid and a base.
Page 129 in the course reader and section 11.3 in the textbook discuss acidic, basic, and amphoteric oxides.

Hope this helps!
