lewis vs. bronsted
What is the distinction between a Lewis acid/base and a Bronsted acid/base? Why are they interchangeable?

Re: lewis vs. bronsted
A Bronsted Acid is a proton donor, a Lewis Acid accepts an electron pair. These are interchangeable because they are saying the same thing. When a proton is donated, the molecule becomes more negative, which is like accepting an electron pair. Bronsted and Lewis acids are the same thing, just a different way of describing what they do.

Is donating a proton really the same as accepting an electron pair? What is the distinction and when does it come into play or are they exactly the same thing just interchangeable terms?

Re: lewis vs. bronsted
This is incorrect, Bronsted Acids donate PROTONS not electrons.

A Bronsted acid is a proton donor while a Lewis acid accepts an electron pair.

Bronsted acids donate protons whereas Lewis acids take in protons, or rather, accept them. Do not confuse protons with electrons here!

Sorry that was my bad. I thought I had put down protons. Thanks for correcting it!

Do we need to know about the Arrhenius acids and bases? I saw it in the textbook but I do not remember him mentioning it in class.

Lewis acids are electron acceptors and Bronsted acids are proton donors. Lewis bases are electron donors and Bronsted bases are proton acceptors.

Thank you so much this helps a lot.
