Weak and Strong Acids and Bases

Postby 605379296 » Fri Nov 29, 2019 2:09 am

How do I determine whether an acid or base is strong or weak? Is it based on if it is a metal or non-metal? Or does it depend on the intermolecular forces or charges?

The strong bases are any group I or II oxides and hydroxides and an indication of a weak base is basically anything with N in it.

For strong acids I had to memorize them as HCl, HBr, HI, HCLO3, HCLO4, HNO3, and H2SO4, but I don't know if Lavelle wants us to know any others.

Mt TA told us some tips which are that inorganic acids are typically strong acids and organic acids are typically weak. To tell the inorganic from the organic, the inorganic normally have the H at the front ( ex. HCl, H2SO4, HClO3) while the organic have the H at the end (ex. CH3COOH, CH3CH(OH)).
