Weak vs. Strong

Postby Bao Tram Nguyen » Sun Dec 01, 2019 9:11 pm

In class, Professor Lavelle mentioned weak vs strong acids and bases. Can someone explain the difference between them?

Stong acids are almost completely ionized in a solution whereas for strong bases they are completely ionized in water. A weak acid will be incompletely ionized in a solution whereas a base would be incompletely ionized in water.

Weak acids will have a higher pH value(lower concentration of hydrogen ions) than strong acids At the same concentration.

Strong acids completely ionize in solution while strong bases completely ionize in water.

Basically strong acids dissociate completely and become ions while for weak acids some of it will dissociate and some will remain as acid.

Stronger acids/bases are completely ionized (dissociated) in solution or water respectively.

An example of a strong acid is HI, which has long/weak bonds and can dissociate completely. An example of a weak acid is HF, which has short/strong bonds and does not dissociate completely.

Strong acids are completely ionized in water or solution while strong bases are completely ionized in solution. Weak acids and bases are partially dissociated in water/solution.
