A conjugate acid is a base that was donated a hydrogen ion and a conjugate base is an acid with one less hydrogen ion.

A conjugate base is what is formed after an acid donates a proton. A conjugate acid is what is formed when a base accepts a proton. An acid and a base which differ only by the presence or absence of a proton are called a conjugate acid-base pair.

The conjugate base is the species formed after the Bronsted acid has donated a proton. The conjugate acid is the species formed after the Bronsted base accepts a proton.
