Stronger Base and Stronger Acid
How do you identify which base is stronger or which acid is stronger when given two bases/acids?

Re: Stronger Base and Stronger Acid
For acids you look at either:
1. Bond length
2. Resulting anion stability.
i'm not sure about bases though

Re: Stronger Base and Stronger Acid
You can determine which acid is stronger by Bond Length and anion stability. The longer the bond length, the stronger the acid. The more stable a molecule is the stronger the acid. Oxoacids work a little differently: the more Oxygens, the higher the electronegativity of the central atom, and the higher the charge of the central atom all lead to the acid being stronger.
The stronger base is correlated with the higher PH. Metal ions tend to be stronger bases because it produces 2 OH-.

Re: Stronger Base and Stronger Acid
Yeah, in addition to above I’ll use the example from the Marshmallow Review:
1. Atomic Size
Basically, the atom with a larger atomic radius makes it a stronger acid:
HF v HCl
Because F has a smaller atomic radius than Cl, HCl is comparatively more acidic
2. Stability
Basically the most stable molecule will be the most acidic:
HOF v HOCl
So in this instance although Cl has a larger atomic radius than F, F is more electronegative, and therefore its going to stabilize better than the Cl, making HOF more acidic
Similar rules apply for the bases as well
