Acid and base strength level tricks

Postby Harrington Bubb3A » Mon Nov 29, 2021 2:01 pm

Does anyone have any good tricks to know if an atom will be an acid or base and the what the relative strength will be. Doesnt need to be exact but how do I develop better intuition on guessing these?

Hello,

Strong acids and bases are those that completely dissociate in water to their respective ions(aq).
Weak acids and bases don't completely dissociate in water

It is helpful to memorize some of the strong acids (knowing these 6 is beneficial)
1. If there is a hydrogen in front of these 3 halogen (Cl, Br, I), it is a strong acid
- HCl,HBr,HI
- HF is not a strong acid due to the short bond length and high bond strength (it is hard to dissociate)

2. HNO3, H2SO4, HClO4 are strong acids
- the electronegative Oxygen pulls the electron density towards itself
- larger atoms with more electrons make a weaker bond with hydrogen
-HClO4 > HNO3 because Cl is more electronegative than N

As for bases, it is helpful to memorize
1. Group 1A (alkali metals) cations with Hydroxide are usually strong bases
2. Group 2A (alkali earth metals) cations with Hydroxide also usually forms strong bases (with the exception of Be and Mg)
