How does drawing lewis structures help in determining the acid and base in a chemical reaction?

Re: drawing lewis structures to determine the acid and base
Well to start, it is good to understand the definitions behind a lewis base and lewis acid. A lewis acid accepts electrons whereas a lewis base donates electrons. Therefore, we can use lewis structures to determine which compounds have extra electrons to give off and which compounds are in need of an electron. Usually, if there are lone pairs on the central atom, then this is a good sign that this could be a lewis base because it can donate that pair of electrons to the lewis acid.

Additionally, it is worth considering the charge of the molecule! Best to draw it out and confirm the presence of extra LPs.
Otherwise, I agree with Tim! Extra lone pairs are a good indicator of a Lewis base since they can donate electrons whereas Lewis acids accept electrons.

Lewis acids are acceptors of electrons, while lewis bases are donators of electrons. Drawing out the lewis structure can be helpful to see which molecules might have an electron pair that could be donated, or which molecules might be good candidates for accepting electrons in a reaction.

From my experience, it's simply helpful to see what electrons/protons may be able to be donated or where there could be an acceptance of a proton/electron.

Hi!
Drawing Lewis structures in order to determine Lewis bases and acids is helpful, because Lewis acids are acceptors of electrons, while Lewis bases donate electrons. Using this information, when you draw out the lewis structures, you can see which molecules have an electron pair that they can donate, or which molecules can accept an electron pair.

Essentially, if the lewis structure has lone pairs, it is highly likely that it will be a base (electron donor). If the lewis structure is likely to accept electrons, then it will be a lewis acid.

Hi there! Drawing lewis structures helps you to see what molecules are good candidates to donate/accept electrons. Generally, lone pairs indicate a Lewis base because then it is more likely to donate electrons. Remember that a lewis acid accepts electrons and a lewis base donates electrons.
