where does the H go?
When an acid is deprotonated and loses its H, does it go to the environment or where does it go?

Re: where does the H go?
I agree with the previous post, I believe it goes to the water to make H3O because when we are measuring pH, we have been utilizing the H3O in the reaction to solve pH problems.

Re: where does the H go?
Acids always donate a proton (by the bronsted definition) to water (H20) to form (H30+) while bases accept a proton from water (H20) to form OH- on the product side.

Re: where does the H go?
An acid will always donate a proton to a base. When an acid is dissolved in water, it will typically donate its proton to a water molecule

Re: where does the H go?
The proton is given to H2O, making H2O the lewis base because it excepts the proton and becomes H3O+, and then the anion left behind by the loss of the H+ proton is just dissolved in water and won't affect pH. Hope this helps!

This was a really good explanation, thank you!

Re: where does the H go?
Most of the time, we are assuming these acids are in an aqueous solution, meaning they are surrounded by water. So, when an acid loses its H, it goes to an H2O molecule and combines with it to make H3O+. This is why acids lower pH; they raise the levels of H3O+.

Hi! When an acid is deprotonated, the H goes to the hydrogen and forms H3O+. I hope that helped!
Re: where does the H go?
It will attach to a water molecule and become H3O+ this is what makes the solution acidic

Re: where does the H go?
I believe that we mostly talk about aqueous solutions in the course and in this case, H+ will bong to a water molecule H2O to form a hydronium ion H3O+

Re: where does the H go?
Depends on what solution it's in, in water it will attach to a water molecule to form H3O+.

Re: where does the H go?
If it is in an aqueous solution then it will donate the proton (H+) to H2O and create a hydronium cation (H3O+). This will thereby lower the pH. Hope this helps!
