HClO4 vs H3PO4

Postby 205743684 » Tue Nov 30, 2021 8:17 pm

Could someone explain why HClO4 is a stronger acid than H3PO4?

I believe that is based on the fact that Cl is more electronegative than P so it pulls the oxygen in tighter. This means that Oxygens electrons are as available to the Hydrogen making it easier for HClO4 to disassociate.

It is because it has a greater oxidation number, and thus has a greater electron drawing power and a weaker OH bond.
