Achieve Problem #6

Postby Maddy Barron 1L » Sat Jan 27, 2024 8:57 am

Hello! Can someone explain how to differentiate acidic, basic, and neutral salts? I understand that basic salts are usually defined by having a N atom with a lone pair, but I am still confused on how to put the salts in the Achieve problem into their respective categories. Thank you!

The best way to approach this type of problem is by breaking the salt apart into the cation and anion.

If the salt is made up of the conjugates of a strong acid and a strong base, then it is neutral.
If the salt is made up of the conjugate base of a strong acid and the conjugate acid of a weak base, then the salt is acidic.
If the salt is made up of the conjugate base of a weak acid and the conjugate acid of a strong base, then the salt is basic.
