### Strong vs. weak

How do we tell the difference between a strong acid or base and a weak one? I know that it refers to the donation of protons, but how can we tell by looking at a chemical equation?

Some of them you just have to memorize. There should be a table in the book (either in Fundamentals or in this chapter) with a list of strong acids and bases.

I don't think you can really tell by the chemical equation. You need to solve for pka/pkb or for phka/phkb in order to determine which ones are stronger or weaker.

You can determine the strength of an acid or a base by looking at the atomic radius. For acids, the larger the atomic radius, the more susceptible it will be to losing a hydrogen making it a stronger acid.

In other cases you will need to mathematically find the values for pH.
